Dreams

For those who have lost their dreams:

St. Anthony knew what it was like to dream for something and never see it come true.

He first became a Franciscan Friar because he had been inspired by the heroic virtue of five Franciscans who travelled to Morocco to preach the faith. They had been martyred there, and their relics had been brought back to Portugal and housed in St. Anthony's Augustinian Priory. He wanted to be like these heroes of the faith, so he asked for and received permission to become a Franciscan.

After a few months of formation, St. Anthony travelled to Morocco himself in the hope that he would die as a martyr for the faith. When his boat arrived there, he immediately fell ill with malaria. By the time that he recovered, he had realized that his illness was a sign from God that he was not to die in this way.

Later, he only desired to spend time in contemplative prayer. He was stationed at a hermitage on Monte Paolo for a while, but one day he and the other friars went down into the town for an ordination to the priesthood. Just before the ceremony began, everyone realized that they had forgotten to ask anyone to preach. The provincial turned to St. Anthony and gave him an obedience to preach that day. His homily was so profound and beautiful that from that day on he was sent out on the road to preach the Good News. Another dream died, only to provide a greater opportunity.

Prayer for oneself:

St. Anthony,
there are times that I get discouraged
because those things that I desire most never seem to work out.
Help me to discern what God wants me to do.
Should I stubbornly push on
or should I acknowledge that God is calling me in a different direction.
If those things that I desire are not to be,
let me find peace in whatever God sends my way.
But if my dreams are God's will,
may I give my all to make them come true.
Amen.

Prayer for others:

St. Anthony,

because those things that he/she desires most never seem to work out.
Help ________ to discern what God wants.
Should he/she stubbornly push on
or should he/she acknowledge that God is calling him/her in a different direction.
If those things that he/she desires are not to be,
let him/her find peace in whatever God sends.
Amen
