Peace of Mind

For those who have lost their peace of mind

There once was a monk who was tormented by sexual temptation. No matter what he did, whether it was fasting or prayer or other penitential practices, the temptations would not go away. When St. Anthony visited his monastery, the monk asked whether he might try on his sweater. As soon as he put it on, his temptations ceased and he was never again bothered by them.

There is another story of a woman whose sins had been so grievous that she was certain that she could never be forgiven. Yet, she had a strong devotion to Saints Francis and Anthony. One day, her favourite saints appeared to her in the form of two friars visiting her. St. Anthony told her that if she were to confess her sins to him, he would take upon himself whatever punishment she deserved. She confessed her sins, and became so calm that she seemed to be another person.

Prayer for oneself:

St. Anthony,
So often I let my worries and concerns overwhelm me.
I worry for myself, for my family, for my friends, for my finances, for so many things.
Yet, all of that worry doesn't seem to do any good.
Teach me to trust again.
Fill me with hope and calm the anxieties of my heart.
Let me truly believe that no matter what happens, it will be all right,
because Christ will be there with me.
Amen.

Prayer for others:

St. Anthony,
I would like to lift _________ up to your intercession.
He/she seems to have so many worries
Teach _________ to let go of control and to trust in you.
Fill him/her with hope and calm the anxieties of his/her heart.
Let him/her truly believe that no matter what happens, it will be all right,
because Christ will be there with him/her.
Amen.
